Overview
My master’s thesis is a study of the terminological quality of definitions and concept descriptions in two encyclopedias and five dictionaries. The idea of the study came to life during my intern ship at Terminologicentrum TNC where Author could notice an interest for a study like this to be imple-mented. In order to delimit my investigation five specific subject areas were picked out in which defi-nitions of six concepts within each subject area were the actual objects of study. The subject areas were linguistics, library and information science, medicine, information technology and econom-ics. The two chosen encyclopedias were Wikipedia and Nationalencyklopedin and the five subject specific dictionaries were Termlexikon i sprakvetenskap, Bibliotekstermer, Medicinska ord – det medicinska spraket: begrepp, definitioner, termer, Nya dataordboken och Juridiska begrepp for ekonomer. My purpose with the study was, by using conceptual analysis theory, to contrast each defini-tion and concept description. Author did this partly by examining the linguistic structure and possible deficiencies and partly by trying to construct conceptual systems of each definition and concept description. Also Author attempted to establish whether any target group matching had taken place. In addition to this, throughout the whole study, Author tried to analyse the subject areas in order to hopeful-ly being able to identify a pattern. My result shows that there are some differences in quality between the terminological content of the seven different sources, however it is not that prominent. Wikipedia which happened to be the most informally written source also had most texts of which conceptual systems could be con-structed. Regarding target group matching all search sources appeared to be generally well matched to their intended users, with a few exceptions. When it came to the five subject areas it was clear that linguistics and library- and information science were the subject areas that had most texts of which conceptual systems could not be constructed. Medicine and economics appeared to be the subject areas which had the most texts of which conceptual systems could be constructed. Due to my non-existent prior knowledge in these subjects, this clearly shows that prior knowledge has not much to do with whether definitions are comprehensible or not. Instead the most important thing is that definitions and concept descriptions are explicitly constructed in which relations to adjacent concepts are clearly detectable.
