Overview

For most people in the Western world, Wikipedia has become the first – and often last – stop for information about pop culture, science, medicine, history, and just about anything else. Donating to the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that runs Wikipedia and its sister projects, has become mainstream. News stories about Wikipedia and its editors are no longer focusing on the oddity of a collection of geeks trying to write an encyclopedia. Instead, that people would choose to do so is not even questioned, and the content they have produced and the complex political system they engage in are scrutinized by the mainstream.
