WikiRank - online tool for automatic relative quality and popularity assessment of Wikipedia articles in different language versions. Currently the tool allows to evaluate articles in 55 languages.

The first mention of the service in scientific works was in 2015.[1] One of the researches that describes the results of the quality assessment using the WikiRank service was recognized as one of the most important findings of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects in 2017–2018.[2]

The distinctive feature of the service is that it allows assess quality and popularity of Wikipedia articles by a scale from 0 to 100 as a result of synthetic measure calculation. This simplifies the comparison of the articles language versions, which can have various grading schemes and assessment standards.[3] To obtain quality and popularity grades, WikiRank uses different important normalized measures, such as:

In the beginning, the service allowed to compare the quality of articles in 7 language versions. Now the service can evaluate articles in more than 50 major language editions of Wikipedia.

WikiRank is used also for didactic purposes in various higher educational institutions (such as the University of Warsaw[17]).

Scores provided by WikiRank used in quality assessment of infoboxes.[18] It is possible to download data sets with WikiRank scores for over 37 million Wikipedia articles.[19]

Development

Example of the Wikipedia article profile on the WikiRank
The service was launched in 2015.

In November 2018 service started using data from DBpedia and Wikidata to show information from various thematic ratings.[20] In May 2019 WikiRank provided new measures (such as local and global popularity) with historical values and published open data sets with quality, popularity and AI measures for over 39 million Wikipedia articles.[21]

In May 2020 WikiRank was upgraded to version 1.01 with new features: fair popularity, citation index, improved quality score and others.[22] For instance, visitors number for some articles was “overclocked” in some periods of time, therefore for such cases the popularity was modified based on different indicators: number of the edits and authors, page protection, the rate of citation increasing of the article, popularity statistics of related keywords (phrases) in Google Trends and others.
