Peer Producers' Motivations and Behavior: a Comparison of Baidupedia and Wikipedia - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2013, written by Jing Chang, Jianmei Yang and Jianfang Chang.
Overview
As a new form of knowledge production based on innovative networking technology, peer production has received considerable attention in both research and enterprises communities. Baidupedia and Wikipedia are the most widely used peer production projects. Baidupedians and Wikipedians are the participants in the two projects, their motivations, behavior and how motivations influence behavior are acquired via an empirical study and literature research respectively, and are then compared. Most important findings are as follows: Wikipedians' motivations (especially the social motivations) are more diversified, Ratio of Wikipedians' direct contributors is more than double that of Baidupedians', Motivations of competence, reciprocity and interest respectively has similar effect, different significance and influence path on behavior in Baidupedia and Wikipedia.
