Cakes: Cross-Lingual Wikipedia Knowledge Enrichment and Summarization - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2012, written by Valeria Fionda and Giuseppe Pirrò.

Overview
Wikipedia is a huge source of multilingual knowledge curated by human contributors. Wiki articles are independently written in the various languages and may cover different perspectives about a given subject. The aim of this paper is to exploit Wikipedia multilingual information for knowledge enrichment and summarization. Investigating the link structure of a Wiki article in a source language and comparing it with the structure of articles about the same subject written in other languages gives insights about the body of knowledge shared among languages. This investigation is also useful to identify knowledge perspectives not covered in the source language but covered in other languages. Authors implemented these ideas in CAKES, which: i) exploits Wikipedia information on the fly without requiring any data preprocessing; ii) enables to specify the set of languages to be considered and; iii) ranks subjects interesting for a given article on the basis of their popularity among languages.
Mariettahttps://wikipediaquality.com/index.php?title=Building_an_Indonesian_Named_Entity_Recognizer_Using_Wikipedia_and_Dbpedia&diff=27410Building an Indonesian Named Entity Recognizer Using Wikipedia and Dbpedia2021-02-07T22:07:19Z
Marietta: Adding embed

Overview
This paper describes the development of an Indonesian NER system using online data such as Wikipedia 1 and DBPedia 2. The system is based on the Stanford NER system [8] and utilizes training documents constructed automatically from Wikipedia. Each entity, i.e. word or phrase that has a hyperlink, in the Wikipedia documents are tagged according to information that is obtained from DBPedia. In this very first version, authors are only interested in three entities, namely: Person, Place, and Organization. The system is evaluated using cross fold validation and also evaluated using a gold standard that was manually annotated. Using cross validation evaluation, Indonesian NER managed to obtain precision and recall values above 90%, whereas the evaluation using gold standard shows that the Indonesian NER achieves high precision but very low recall.
Developing an Annotator for Latin Texts Using Wikipedia - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2016, written by Raffaele Guarasci.

Overview
This work investigates the feasibility of using Wikipedia as a resource for annotations of Latin texts. Although Wikipedia is an excellent resource from which to extract many kinds of information (morphological, syntactic and semantic) to be used in NLP tasks on modern languages, it was rarely applied to perform NLP tasks for the Latin language. The work presents the first steps of the development of a POS Tagger based on the Latin version of Wiktionary and a Wikipedia-based semantic annotator.
The Changes in the Republican Presidential Candidates' Wikipedia Articles Leading Up to Super Tuesday 2012 - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2012, written by Matthew R. Cox.

Overview
Throughout its more than 11 years of existence, many librarians, professors, and teachers, among countless others, have been wary of Wikipedia due to its seemingly unregulated nature and the fact that anyone can make changes to its articles. Although many of these justifiably skeptical professionals have become more accepting of Wikipedia as a good source for finding a general overview of a topic, there continues to be a great deal of distrust in the site’s accuracy. Articles on politicians and controversial issues are often seen as even less reliable than other types of articles since they are thought of as particularly attractive targets for vandalism by those who do not agree with the individuals or concepts that serve as the subject. By the time that the campaign for the 2012 Republican nomination for president reached March 6—Super Tuesday—four candidates remained in the race: Newt Gingrich, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives; Ron Paul, a member of the House of Representatives and former presidential nominee of the Libertarian Party; Mitt Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts; and Rick Santorum, a former member of the Senate. For this paper, Author examined the revision histories of the Wikipedia articles for these four candidates for the period beginning on February 21 and ending on March 7 in order to include any revisions that were made soon after the March 6 election results were announced. Author looked for instances in which inaccurate, misleading, or malicious information was added and observed how long it took for that information to be removed. Author also studied the other changes that were made, such as the addition of new information, the removal of existing information, and the rewriting of passages of text, and attempted to identify any major similarities or differences in the treatment of the four articles. Author concluded that the articles were generally reliable since vandalism was removed very quickly and questionable information was usually removed or revised fairly quickly. Not many changes were made due to current events. A large number of the revisions that were done involved issues of word choice, punctuation, and formatting and did not affect the substantive content of the articles.
Overview
Background: Wikipedia is an easily available and commonly used source of medical information for patients and practitioners. Its editing guidelines state that information added to the site should be accompanied by in-line citations to reliable (preferably secondary) sources to meet the website’s standards for verifiability. Authors hypothesized that a large fraction of these citations would be to popular media and to scientific works of relatively low academic impact.
Move Along Now, Nothing to See Here': the Private Discussion Spheres of Wikipedia - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2009, written by Ayelet Oz.

Overview
The enforcement mechanisms on Wikipedia enact an internal conflict between Wikipedia’s open, inclusive ethos and its organizational reliance on power, hierarchy and punishment. Wikipedia resolves the conflict by burying the punitive practices behind a series of mechanisms that make them less visible to newer users. The characteristics of the MediaWiki software and different use patterns of different Wikipedia contributors join to form the mechanisms that mediate the conflict between the aspirational and organizational goals. The split between main pages and talk pages, the fragmentation of a single discussion to multiple pages, and the use of notice boards, create private spaces for administrators and advanced users to act away from the eyes of new users. While these elitist consequences obviously go against the open ethos of Wikipedia, they give valuable tools in the hands of administrators keeping Wikipedia interruption-free. Therefore, these mechanisms present an important challenge to the community - one that requires it to rethink both Wikipedia’s technical infrastructure and its normative vision.
Unsupervised Language-Independent Name Translation Mining from Wikipedia Infoboxes - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2011, written by Wen-Pin Lin, Matthew G. Snover and Heng Ji.

Overview
The automatic generation of entity profiles from unstructured text, such as Knowledge Base Population, if applied in a multi-lingual setting, generates the need to align such profiles from multiple languages in an unsupervised manner. This paper describes an unsupervised and language-independent approach to mine name translation pairs from entity profiles, using Wikipedia Infoboxes as a stand-in for high quality entity profile extraction. Pairs are initially found using expressions that are written in language-independent forms (such as dates and numbers), and new translations are then mined from these pairs. The algorithm then iteratively bootstraps from these translations to learn more pairs and more translations. The algorithm maintains a high precision, over 95%, for the majority of its iterations, with a slightly lower precision of 85.9% and an f-score of 76%. A side effect of the name mining algorithm is the unsupervised creation of a translation lexicon between the two languages, with an accuracy of 64%. Authors also duplicate three state-of-the-art name translation mining methods and use two existing name translation gazetteers to compare with approach. Comparisons show approach can effectively augment the results from each of these alternative methods and resources.
Exploiting Wikipedia in Query Understanding Systems - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2010, written by Richard Khoury.

Overview
In recent years, the free online encyclopaedia Wikipedia has become a standard resource to exploit to build knowledge base for various Natural Language Processing applications. In this paper, authors exploit that resource to design a new query classification system. Authors explain and justify the steps authors take to extract information from Wikipedia into a structured database, in order to demonstrate the validity of design. Authors then show, both with mathematical reasoning and with experimental results, how to exploit the information in the database for the purpose of query classification.
Rationalists assert that real-life coincidences occur no more frequently than is predictable by chance, but (outside stylized settings such as birthdays) empirical evidence is scant. Authors describe a study, with a few real-life features, of coincidences noticed in reading random articles in Wikipedia. Part of a rationalist program (that one can use specic observed coincidences to infer general types of unobserved coincidence and estimate probabilities of coincidences therein) can be examined in this context, and ts data well enough. Wikipedia as a Tool for Disseminating Knowledge of (Agro)Biodiversity - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2014, written by Angelo Signore, F. Serio and Pietro Santamaria.

Overview
The dissemination of knowledge about (agro)biodiversity is a strategic factor in communicating the urgent need to defend and protect biological diversity. Although this can be carried out with various media, in recent years social media (or ‘‘Web 2.0’’) have begun to assume a prominent role. Of the Web 2.0 services, Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation, San Francisco, CA) is one of the most powerful and interesting tools, for several reasons, being collaborative by nature, free of charge, multilingual, and accessible online; in addition, anyone can update the materials therein. Within the framework of the regional project ‘‘Rural Development Programme 2007-2013,’’ research group, responsible of the collection of historical information and morphological characterization of several vegetable crops considered to be at risk of genetic erosion, proposed the use of Wikipedia as a dissemination tool. The objective of this study was to show how to add/modify articles in Wikipedia for online divulgation and to demonstrate its validity by analyzing some data (pageviews, editing history, and the impact of Wikipedia as a referral toward the project’s institutional website) related to the Wikipedia articles that were added/ modified. The article about the landrace variety Carota di Polignano carrot (Daucus carota), created from scratch, received more than 15,000 pageviews in less than 2 years. Referrals from Wikipedia increased the visits to the institutional website by 30%, whereas the bounce rate decreased by 15%. Wikipedia may be a good tool to improve the dissemination of knowledge about (agro)biodiversity either online or offline, and the addition in Wikipedia’s pages of scientific journal references and of links to projects’ website may strengthen the diffusion of scientific knowledge.
Omnipedia: Bridging the Wikipedia Language Gap - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2012, written by Patti Bao, Brent J. Hecht, Samuel H. Carton, Mahmood Quaderi, Michael S. Horn and Darren Gergle.

Overview
Authors present Omnipedia, a system that allows Wikipedia readers to gain insight from up to 25 language editions of Wikipedia simultaneously. Omnipedia highlights the similarities and differences that exist among Wikipedia language editions, and makes salient information that is unique to each language as well as that which is shared more widely. Authors detail solutions to numerous front-end and algorithmic challenges inherent to providing users with a multilingual Wikipedia experience. These include visualizing content in a language-neutral way and aligning data in the face of diverse information organization strategies. Authors present a study of Omnipedia that characterizes how people interact with information using a multilingual lens. Authors found that users actively sought information exclusive to unfamiliar language editions and strategically compared how language editions defined concepts. Finally, authors briefly discuss how Omnipedia generalizes to other domains facing language barriers.
Public Relations Interactions with Wikipedia - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2016, written by Gareth Thompson.

Overview
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to consider the relevance of the institutional analysis and development (IAD) framework (Ostrom, 1990) in understanding the incentives for public relations (PR) practitioners’ interactions with Wikipedia, and other common-pool media. Design/methodology/approach – This interdisciplinary conceptual paper applies the economics theory of commons governance to two case studies of PR interactions with Wikipedia. Findings – The analysis concludes that commons governance theory identifies the downside risks of opportunistic behaviour by PR practitioners in their interactions with media commons such as Wikipedia. The paper concludes that Ostrom’s IAD model is relevant to the governance of PR interactions and offers guidance on productive PR practice in common-pool media. Research limitations/implications – The analysis was applied to only two cases for which information was widely available. Practical implications – The paper includes implications for the scope of PR practice...
Wikipedia in the Classroom? Perceptions and Attitudes of Transfer Students Towards the Use of Wikipedia - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2012, written by Malissa Maria Mahmud.

Overview
This paper provides a description of how Wikipeda was incorporated as a pedagogical means in the ESL settings and reports on the students' attitude and perception on the use of Wikipedia to enhance their L2 proficiency specifically their writing skills.Th experience involved the use of wiki technology and the advanced collaborative forms and participative assessment as part of the teaching method. The results indicate they perceived that the use of Wikipedia had generally enhanced their L2 skills such as reading and writing, expanded their social circles, improved their communication skills and minimized their apprehension when learning and using the language among their peers.
Embracing Wikipedia as a Teaching and Learning Tool Benefits Health Professional Schools and the Populations They Serve - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2017, written by Amin Azzam.

Overview
To paraphrase Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia co-founder, “Imagine a world where all people have access to high quality health information clearly written in their own language.” Author believe that most health professional students endorse that goal, as do individuals who volunteer to contribute to Wikipedia’s health-related content. Bringing these two communities together inspired my team’s efforts: a course for medical students to earn academic credit for improving Wikipedia. Here Author describe the evolution of that course between 2013 – 2017, and highlight ongoing partnerships with Wikiproject Medicine, Translators Without Borders, and Wikipedia Zero. These collaborations align with health professional schools’ local service missions. If more faculty and schools embrace Wikipedia as a teaching and learning tool for tomorrow’s health professionals, those local service missions suddenly expand into a truly global network—accelerating fulfillment of Wikipedia’s audacious goal. In this manuscript, Author reflect on my experiences embracing Wikipedia as a medical educator, and speculate about potential implications for the future of health professional education globally.
Vandalism on Collaborative Web Communities: an Exploration of Editorial Behaviour in Wikipedia - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2018, written by Abdulwhab Alkharashi and Joemon M. Jose.

Overview
Modern online discussion communities allow people to contribute, sometimes anonymously. Such flexibility sometimes threatens the reputation and reliability of community-owned resources. Such flexibility is understandable, however, they engender threats to the reputation and reliability in collective goods. Since not a lot of previous work addressed these issues it is important to study the aforementioned issues to build an innate understanding of recent ongoing vandalism of Wikipedia pages and ways to preventing those. In this study, authors consider the type of activity that the anonymous users carry out on Wikipedia and also contemplate how others react to their activities. In particular, authors want to study vandalism of Wikipedia pages and ways of preventing this kind of activity. Authors preliminary analysis reveals (~ 90%) of the vandalism or foul edits are done by unregistered users in Wikipedia due to nature of openness. The community reaction seemed to be immediate: most vandalisms were reverted within five minutes on an average. Further analysis shed light on the tolerance of Wikipedia community, reliability of anonymous users revisions and feasibility of early prediction of vandalism.

Overview
The mobile devices are everywhere and the gaming industry has an important market share on this field. This paper aims to present a new approach of game which generates autonomous its content, without human intervention, by using existing facts from the semantic version of Wikipedia, called DBpedia. At the beginning a short introduction of the studied field and of the used terms and technologies is presented. There are also remembered similar approaches and different struggles from this domain. In the middle part the architecture and the logic of the system are shown. The paper ends with some conclusions and future plans.
Copyright laws traditionally attempt to incentivize expression and minimize free rider problems through legal restrictions, at the expense of closing off access to cultural history. However, entrepreneurial changes to institutions and the creation of alternative governance structures can allow for spaces that facilitate expression without resorting to the copyright approach. Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, stands as a highly visible example of such institutional entrepreneurship, leveraging copyright law against its intended purpose. This paper uses the Bloomington School’s IAD framework to explain the success of Wikipedia’s alternative model of managing a common resource of free encyclopedia articles, and suggests a roadmap for understanding the role of institutional entrepreneurship in crafting alternative governance structures to foster expression.
Overview
Although chronobiology is of growing interest to scientists, physicians, and the general public, access to recent discoveries and historical perspectives is limited. Wikipedia is an online, user-written encyclopedia that could enhance public access to current understanding in chronobiology. However, Wikipedia is lacking important information and is not universally trusted. Here, 46 students in a university course edited Wikipedia to enhance public access to important discoveries in chronobiology. Students worked for an average of 9 h each to evaluate the primary literature and available Wikipedia information, nominated sites for editing, and, after voting, edited the 15 Wikipedia pages they determined to be highest priorities. This assignment (http://www.nslc.wustl.edu/courses/Bio4030/wikipedia_project.html) was easy to implement, required relatively short time commitments from the professor and students, and had measurable impacts on Wikipedia and the students. Students created 3 new Wikipedia sites, edi...
Manypedia: Comparing Language Points of View of Wikipedia Communities - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2012, written by Paolo Massa and Federico Scrinzi.

Overview
The 4 million articles of the English Wikipedia have been written in a collaborative fashion by more than 16 million volunteer editors. On each article, the community of editors strive to reach a neutral point of view, representing all significant views fairly, proportionately, and without biases. However, beside the English one, there are more than 280 editions of Wikipedia in different languages and their relatively isolated communities of editors are not forced by the platform to discuss and negotiate their points of view. So the empirical question is: do communities on different language Wikipedias develop their own diverse Linguistic Points of View (LPOV)? To answer this question authors created and released as open source Manypedia, a web tool whose aim is to facilitate cross-cultural analysis of Wikipedia language communities by providing an easy way to compare automatically translated versions of their different representations of the same topic.
Topic Indexing with Wikipedia - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2008, written by Olena Medelyan, Ian H. Witten and David N. Milne.

Overview
Wikipedia article names can be utilized as a controlled vocabulary for identifying the main topics in a document. Wikipedia’s 2M articles cover the terminology of nearly any document collection, which permits controlled indexing in the absence of manually created vocabularies. Authors combine state-of-the-art strategies for automatic controlled indexing with Wikipedia’s unique property—a richly hyperlinked encyclopedia. Authors evaluate the scheme by comparing automatically assigned topics with those chosen manually by human indexers. Analysis of indexing consistency shows that algorithm outperforms some human subjects.
What's on Wikipedia, and What's Not . . . ? - scientific work related to Wikipedia quality published in 2009, written by Cindy Royal and Deepina Kapila.

Overview
The World Wide Web continues to grow closer to achieving the vision of becoming the repository of all human knowledge, as features and applications that support user-generated content become more prevalent. Wikipedia is fast becoming an important resource for news and information. It is an online information source that is increasingly used as the first, and sometimes only, stop for online encyclopedic information. Using a method employed by Tankard and Royal to judge completeness of Web content, completeness of information on Wikipedia is assessed. Some topics are covered more comprehensively than others, and the predictors of these biases include recency, importance, population, and financial wealth. Wikipedia is more a socially produced document than a value-free information source. It reflects the viewpoints, interests, and emphases of the people who use it.
